Handmade Checker Is Live - Detect AI-Generated Listings on Etsy in One Click
It started with a specific frustration.
I was shopping on Etsy for a gift. Something handmade, something with character. After scrolling through pages of listings, I started noticing a pattern. A lot of the listings look like they were made using AI. Especially in categories with keywords like “seeds”.

The descriptions had this same cadence, same structure, same artifacts you see in AI-generated images and content. Product after product felt like it had been thrown up using AI, not handmade.
I wasn’t wrong.
Etsy is getting flooded with AI-generated listings. Sellers are using generative AI to create product images, write descriptions, and fabricate an “authentic handmade” vibe, without actually making anything by hand. It’s getting harder and harder to tell the difference.
So I built a tool that can help.
What It Is
Handmade Checker is a Chrome extension that analyzes Etsy listings using Google Gemini AI and tells you, in one click, whether a product is likely handmade or AI-generated. It’s free to start, takes seconds to use, just create an account to scan a listing.

Here’s how it works:
- Browse Etsy normally. Go to any listing page.
- Click “Check Listing.” A button appears below “Add to Cart.”
- Get a score. 0–100% authenticity rating with color-coded results. Green = likely handmade. Orange/red = likely AI-generated.
- Read the breakdown. The extension shows you why it scored that way, image analysis, title patterns, and description signals.
No copy-paste. No extra steps. Just a click.
Why It Matters
Etsy’s whole premise is handmade goods. When AI listings crowd out actual makers, everybody loses. Buyers can’t trust what they’re buying, and real artisans can’t compete with AI generated volume.
Handmade Checker doesn’t solve the whole problem. But it gives you, the shopper, more control, and a way to push back. One listing at a time.
Pricing
- Free — 10 checks/day. Enough for casual shopping.
- Pro — $4/month or $48/year. 100 checks/day, full detailed explanations, check history, auto-check on listing pages.
What’s Next
I’m working on improvements to the detection model, button placement (I already noticed Etsy is changing their layout since I published), broader marketplace support, and maybe some community features.
